Domain expiry follows a fairly standard sequence across most registries, including KENIC. Understanding the stages helps you know exactly how urgent your situation is if you've missed a renewal.
Stage 1: Expiry Date Passes
Your website and any email hosted on that domain typically stop working almost immediately, even though the domain isn't gone yet.
Stage 2: Grace Period
Most registries offer a grace period — often around 30 days — during which you can still renew the domain at the normal renewal price. This is the easiest and cheapest window to act in.
Stage 3: Redemption Period
If the grace period passes without renewal, some registries move the domain into a redemption phase where it can still be recovered, but usually at a significantly higher fee on top of the normal renewal cost.
Stage 4: Released
Eventually, if nothing is done, the domain is released back into the public pool and becomes available for anyone — including competitors — to register.
The Real Risk
Beyond losing the domain itself, someone else registering your old domain can redirect it, impersonate your business, or simply hold it hostage waiting for you to buy it back at an inflated price.
