Daraja is the name of Safaricom's official API platform, and it's the technology underneath most legitimate M-Pesa integrations on websites and apps in Kenya.
What Daraja Actually Provides
Daraja gives developers a way to programmatically trigger M-Pesa actions — most commonly STK Push for payments, but also things like checking transaction status, B2C payments (business to customer), and account balance queries, all through a secure, documented API.
Why It Matters
Before Daraja, businesses had no official, secure way to connect their systems directly to M-Pesa — payments had to be manually reconciled against paybill statements. Daraja made real-time, automated M-Pesa integration possible.
