Whether you're consolidating your domains under one provider or switching because of better pricing and support, transferring a domain is a standard, well-defined process.
Step 1: Unlock the Domain
Log into your current registrar's control panel and disable the registrar lock (sometimes called domain lock or transfer lock) on the domain you want to move.
Step 2: Get Your EPP/Authorization Code
Request the EPP code (also called an auth code or transfer key) from your current registrar. This proves you're the legitimate owner authorising the transfer.
Step 3: Confirm the Domain Isn't Newly Registered
Most registries won't allow a transfer within 60 days of initial registration or a previous transfer — this is a standard anti-fraud rule, not something specific to any registrar.
Step 4: Start the Transfer
Begin the transfer with your new registrar using the domain transfer option, entering your EPP code when prompted.
Step 5: Approve the Transfer
You'll typically receive a confirmation email — either from your old registrar, the new one, or both — that you need to approve before the transfer completes.
Step 6: Wait for Completion
Transfers usually complete within a few days. Your website and email should continue working throughout, since a domain transfer changes who manages the domain, not where it points.
